According to the “Cost vs. Value Report, 2008-2009 published by Remodeling and Realator magazines, new siding, decks, windows and kitchen renovation topped the list of home improvements with the biggest payback. In general, homowners will recoup about 70-80 percent of the cost of replacing siding, decks, windows and kitchen renovations.

An upscale bathroom remodel will run about $56,626 and the value at the sale of the home will be $37,959 or 67 percent.
A mid-range basement remodel costs approximately $69505 but is only worth an additional $41,662 or 59.9 percent at the sale of the home.
The smallest payback, according to the report, is a mid-range home office remodel, costing an average of $29,949 in New England but worth only $12,949 at sale or 44.6 percent. However, if you put in a home office, you might make up the difference in time, money and aggravation saved by working from the home.
